TRAINORS TRAINING WORKSHOP: PROMOTING CULTURAL LITERACY THROUGH FILM

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The commemoration of the Centenary of Philippine Cinema provides an occasion to reflect on the significance of motion pictures in representing and conveying Filipino culture. What is "Filipino" in Philippine culture? How can film be used to understand Filipino culture? Are there ways to understand Filipino culture in cinematic ways? How can film be used in classroom teaching of Filipino culture? These are questions and challenges that will be addressed in this workshop. Practical and filmic exercises will guide participants in utulizing film to explore Filipino culture with specific interest on film culture and depiction of culture on film. A multi-disciplnary approach will be deployed but will rely mostly on the combination of culturalist, semiotic and historical approaches.
More than arriving at fixed and immutable answers to questions on culture, the workshop will open the minds of participants and introduce skills in asking and arriving at answers that will make them understand textually, linguistically and contextually how cinema can be a tool for the study of Filipino (film) culture.
Workshop is conducted by Prof. Nick Deocampo (University of the Philippines), filmmaker, educator and historian. Prof. Deocampo (in photo) is this year's FACINE GAWAD GINTONG ANI [gold harvest/Lifetime Achievement] awardee.
