La Traviata features old style Italian food at a reasonable price. It's easy to get to if you take BART - get off at the 24th Street exit. It's the kind of place that's little on the kitschy side, they play opera music, have tons of photos of famous people who have eaten there over the years, and play an operatic version of "Happy Birthday" for birthday girls and boys.
The creation of the restaurant "La Traviata" was inspired by the vision of its founder, Zef Shilaku. At age 17, Zef fled Albania in 1948 and went to Vienna, Austria. This is where he first experienced a life-changing performance of Verdi's opera "La Traviata". This opera had a profound effect on Zef instilling a passion for the opera art form that was to last his entire life.
While living in San Francisco in 1973, Zef had a fateful reunion with an old friend, chef Gaetano Ramacet, who proposed a new restaurant venture which led to the birth of the "La Traviata" we know today.
