Dog Eared Books is turning THIRTY YEARS OLD! On Sunday, September 18th, Dog Eared Books is celebrating its 30th year with a Thank You Oh So Much sale and a silk-screening party.
Thirty years ago, Kate Razo opened up Dog Eared Books on Valencia. Back then, the store was near 23rd Street in the space now occupied by Needles & Pens. After a couple years, Kate saw that the furniture/rummage store on the southwest corner of 20th & Valencia was leaving, so she sent good tidings to the Book Gods. The Book Gods blessed us and Dog Eared Books has been there ever since.
Dog Eared wasn't Kate's first book store: In her mid-twenties, she opened up Phoenix Books in Noe Valley. Dog Eared Books was next (1992), Followed by Red Hill Books in Bernal Heights, which became Badger Books. Kate sold Phoenix (renamed Folio Books) and Red Hill/Badger fade away.
Ten years ago, Kate opened Alley Cat Books on 24th Street, in the Mission District, followed by Dog Eared Books in the Castro. Both were embraced by their neighborhoods with much enthusiasm and are still selling books under different names and owners (Alley Cat is now Medicine for Nightmares. Dog Eared Castro is now owned by former Dog Eared employee Alvin Orloff, who renamed it Fabulosa! Books).
But, since 1992, Dog Eared Books has called the Mission District home. We've been here through the dot.com boom, the dot.bomb crash, the rise (and fall) of chain bookstores, the 2008 economic collapse, the tech boom, gentrification, and the pandemic. At one time, the Mission was home to a dozen bookstores. Of the nine that were on Valencia Street, we are the sole survivor. We are that scrappy little dog that perseveres.
We've gotten here thanks to a dedicated, creative staff and deep love from the community. The support we felt during the pandemic reminded us that San Francisco and especially the Mission District believes that Dog Eared Books is a valuable resource. People visiting from out of town, often from areas of the country plagued with book bans, tell us that they wished they had a Dog Eared Books at home.
We take none of the support or good words we receive for granted. We know how important it is to have the kind of support and to feel the love that we do. We know that we live in a very special city in a very special part of town. We are thankful for all that. Which is why we are celebrating our 30th year with a Thank You sale and a screen-printing party (bring a shirt, dress, book bag, bedsheet, whatever and we will screen it with our logo...for free).
