In the news and in the culture is a constant examination of body image, body-shaming and the roles these play in our interaction with our community. In the spirit of Halloween, Jamie Wright is creating a new ballet, Gothic, loosely-based on the most extreme case of beauty dysmorphia in history, Elizabeth Bathory. This countess, in quest to stay young, is rumored to have murdered close to 600 young women and drank their blood, hoping that their youth would be transferred to her. Gothic features an original score by noted jazz-rock guitarist, Chris Tozzi, whose music was praised by "Guitar Player" magazine as "a fabulous amalgam of melody, tone, technique, and fury." The DanceWright Project will also premiere Bach Beauties, a contemporary ballet movement study to the music of Bach's Cello Concertos. In addition, The DanceWright Project will reprise Sacred Femme, an excerpt of the 2007 Tozzi concept album, Olympus Rising, NOLA Funk and a study of New Orleans funk music from the 1960s to today, and a short comic work by renowned composer, George Peter Tingley.
This 9th season for The DanceWright Project will also feature a number of guest artists. Hai Yan Jackson Chinese Dance will present a contemporary take on Classical Chinese Movement. PERSpectives Dance Company will bring their high-energy and emotional contemporary jazz work. Bay Area dance artists, the Move Messenger(s) will return for a 3rd season. Newcomers Victor Talledos, Brannigan Dance Works, and Adrienne Swan will present a work in progress. Renowned deaf contemporary dance artist Antoine Hunter will appear for the Sunday show. And South Bay youth companies Dac Pac and Dance Attack! will return with their crowd-pleasing young artists.
