After a sold-out run in 2016, South of Market: The Musical returns to San Francisco this fall with version 2.0 of the musical revue that pokes fun at the year’s trends, issues and absurdities within the Bay Area’s tech culture. South of Market: The Musical v2 co-creative directors and producers Pat Blute and Sam O’Keefe are joined by a creative team sourced from both San Francisco’s tech and theatre communities. The result is 75-minute performance, ideal for a hustling startup founder, a seasoned theatre buff or anyone who has experienced the impact of technology in their everyday life.
South of Market: The Musical v2 follows Alex, a tech journalist who is in pursuit of the truth in an age where fake news runs rampant and a story’s success is solely based on the number of clicks it receives. Upon meeting Ethan and Hunter, the founders of an AI company, Alex and her colleague Brooklyn soon discover there’s a lot more to the company than the story being told in their press releases. Alex will need to determine if she can maintain her values while getting the real story out to the world. With music written and directed by composer Tareq Abuissa, the cast will perform original songs “Self Driving,” “Up And To The Right,” and “Off The Record” as they navigate the perks and perils of San Francisco’s startup hype machine.
