THELONIOUS MONK 100TH BIRTHDAY DOUBLE FEATURE ON TUESDAY OCTOBER 10 AT BALBOA!!!
MONK & MONK IN EUROPE: Thelonious Monk was a giant of American music. He was a composer, pianist and band leader, renowned for his compositions and improvisations, and was truly one of the great musicians of the golden age of American Jazz. On Tuesday, October 10, 2017 he would have been 100 years old, and we are celebrating his amazing life with two rare and wonderful films, and a musical tribute to him hosted by our friends at NOISE RECORDS on Balboa Street!
In 1968, Michael Blackwood made two cinema verite documentaries about Monk and his music.
The first film, “Monk,” takes place in New York at a Columbia Records recording session and at the Village Vanguard, as well as the Newport Jazz Festival's Atlanta Concert. His quartet includes Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone), Larry Gales (bass) and Ben Riley (drums).
In the second film, "Monk in Europe", he travels to six cities -- London, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Paris and Amsterdam – accompanied by eight musicians, playing his well-known repertoire to enthusiastic audiences. Additional musicians in this film include Ray Copeland and Clark Terry (trumpet), Phil Woods, Johnny Griffin and Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone), Jimmy Cleveland (trombone), Larry Gales (bass), and Ben Riley (drums).
Before, between, and after the films we will have live performance in the Balboa lobby from NOISE RECORDS proprietor Dan Johnson and his jazz trio!
Please join us to celebrate the life and work of this incredible artist!
