at Former Yoshi's San Francisco Location - Now Closed (see times)
In 1999, Marcus Shelby’s interest in composing for big band orchestra and his work in collaboration with the Bay Area multidisciplinary arts organization Intersection for the Arts led him to form the Marcus Shelby Orchestra. The MSO is comprised of San Francisco Bay Area musicians and have featured and performed with many respected guest artists such as Faye Carol, Kenny Washington, Ledisi, Roberto Gamberini, Gerri Allen, Mary Stallings, Kim Nalley, Clairdee, Joanna Haigood, Paul Flores, and many, many more.

In the past 15 years, Shelby has written an extensive series of original compositions, suites, tone poems, film scores, ballets, and arrangements for the orchestra and has partnered with the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, the Intersection for the Arts, Z Space, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, the San Francisco Jazz Festival, and Living Jazz to present many of these commissioned works. Shelby has been awarded two residencies with the Intersection for the Arts through Theater Communications Group and Meet the Composer. Shelby has also been awarded two creative work fund grants, a Gerbode Foundation grant, an Irvine Foundation grant, and two San Francisco Commission individual artist grants to support work created and performed by the Marcus Shelby Orchestra.

In 2002, Shelby was commissioned by the Equal Justice Society to compose a suite in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Port Chicago Explosion. In 2005, Shelby composed an oratorio for big band orchestra and vocal ensemble about the life of Harriet Tubman. In 2009, Shelby received the Black Metropolis Research Consortium Fellowship in Chicago to conduct research at the University of Chicago and the Columbia Black Music Research Center. This residency provided the research for Shelby’s oratorio titled “Soul of the Movement: Meditations on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”. This oratorio was recorded and ultimately reached #2 on national jazz radio charts (February 2011). In November 2013, Marcus Shelby and his orchestra premiered and performed “Bebop Baby” a musical composed by Marcus Shelby in collaboration with writer and actress Margo Hall and produced by the Z Space.

The Marcus Orchestra currently performs all around the San Francisco Bay Area and has played at venues such as the San Francisco Jazz Festival, The San Jose Jazz Festival, Yoshis, Kuumbwa, dozens of universities, churches, elementary schools, and street festivals. The MSO currently has 4 recordings (“The Lights Suite”, “Port Chicago”, “Harriet Tubman” and “Soul of the Movement”).
