San Francisco’s Best Late-Night Dining

San Francisco has a reputation in some circles (we’re looking at you, New York transplants) for being a city that closes early. Its true, many clubs start closing down before last call at 2am and they are quiet well before many other more nocturnal cities, but many San Francisco restaurant keep pace with late-night dining to appease the after-hours crowd, night owls and everyone in between. Here are a few of our favorites.

Grubstake
1525 PINE ST, OPEN UNTIL 4AM
A no-frills Polk Gulch staple since the 1960s, diners at Grubstake decide when they want to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner from 5pm to 4am everyday. The menu is composed of diner classics and also a few Portuguese dishes—a rare find in San Francisco. Look closely and you’ll realize part of the restaurant is a converted historic cable car. Delarosa
2175 CHESTNUT ST AT PIERCE ST, OPEN UNTIL 1AM
Delarosa draws big crowds in the Marina with “Roman style” pizza (hot salami, coppa, tomato, diavolicchio or clams, tomato, provolone, garlic) and pasta. Expect a lively crowd with a full cocktail menu, wine list and beer offerings.

Cocobang
550 TAYLOR ST AT POST ST, OPEN UNTIL 2AM AND 4AM WEEKENDS
The menu at late-night Korean hub Cocobang features typical Korean bulgolgi meats as well as Korean spiced fried chicken. The meat portions are generous and the cheese corn is to die for. It’s a great stop for a last meal after partying at one of the nearby clubs and bars surrounding Union Square, but expect a line.

Dear Mom
2700 16TH ST AT TREAT, OPEN UNTIL MIDNIGHT AND 1:30AM WEEKENDS
In addition to tasty cocktails and a healthy selection of brown liquor, Dear Mom offers quality burgers of both the beef and lamb variety. Diners can also order boozy desserts, such as a rum and coke float or a white Russian milk shake aptly named “The Dude.”

Wing Wings
422 HAIGHT ST AT FILLMORE ST, OPEN UNTIL MIDNIGHT AND 2AM WEEKENDS
Wing Wings quickly established itself as the go-to wings joint shortly after it opened on Lower Hate. The spicy Angry Korean is a no-brainer for those who don’t mind a little heat, traditionalists are appeased with buffalo and honey mustard flavors. There’s not much room to linger inside the small storefront with counter-top dining, but there’s no reason to with wings going from fryer to fingers in short order. Delivery is also available until 11pm.

Trick Dog
310 20TH ST AT FLORIDA, OPEN UNTIL 2AM
Trick Dog is open six days a week until 2am—It is a bar after all. But in addition innovative and classy cocktails, Trick Dog offers Scotch Eggs (eggs, covered in meat with bread crumbs), kale salad and a burger in a hot dog bun (the trick of the restaurant’s name).

Arinell Pizza
509 VALENCIA AT 16TH ST, OPEN UNTIL 2AM
Arinell offers a world-class slice, with a taste of New York City in every bite. It has a thin crust, enormous slices and the perfect amount of grease. Believe us when we say that the cheese pizza actually could be enough here, but that doesn’t mean hungry diners shouldn’t add a few toppings. It’s one of the best pizza slices in the city, regardless of time of day.

Box Kitchen
431 NATOMA ST, OPEN UNTIL 1AM
From an unassuming window next to Tempest in SoMa, the Box Kitchen serves everything from chicken and waffles to gourmet burgers with fries cooked in duck fat. Open weekends until 1am, its the perfect match for the 32oz beers served next door at the bar or quick bite after a party at Mezzanine.

Taqueria Cancun
3211 MISSION ST AT 19TH ST, OPEN UNTIL 2AM
In the great San Francisco burrito debate, Taqueria Cancun is among the best options with multiple locations throughout the city. We prefer the Mission St. location, within walking distance to several late-night haunts and open until 2am. You’ll find fresh avocado in the super burritos and the salsa verde is magical and very spicy. Proceed with caution.

Orphan Andy’s
17TH ST AT CASTRO, OPEN 24 HOURS
Orphan Andy’s serves quality and diner fare, perfect for a last meal after a boozy night in the Castro. Anything with french fries is always good and it’s hard not to be tempted by breakfast all day or a chicken fried steak. Coffee flows freely and the ambiance with red vinyl booths help turn late night delirium into late night delight.

Taqueria Vallarta
3033 24TH ST, OPEN UNTIL 1AM
Taqueria Vallarta is famous for $1.75 tacos al vapor (steamed tacos), prepared on a stand near the entrance. The menu at this particular location also features seven different vegetarian burritos as well as Italian and New York themed buritto-like wraps.

Hi Tops
2247 MARKET ST, OPEN UNTIL 12AM AND 2AM WEEKENDS
Surprising as it may seem, this is indeed San Francisco’s first officially gay sports bar. It doesn’t matter, however, which team one bats for, the food here is what really elevates this new Castro haunt from grunge and football to a high-class experience. The menu, created by an alumni of Top Chef, features pork chops on a stick and a blackened ahi tuna burger and 25 cent wings on Monday.

Nopa
560 DIVISADERO, OPEN UNTIL 1AM
Picture this: A burger grass-fed and well composed with a fatty patty, topped with pickled onions and an aioli on the side surrounded by a house-made brioche bun. Nopa is filled with Californian delights for any palate complemented by an impressive cocktail menu. Go ahead and make a reservation for 10:30. That will still leave plenty of time to enjoy each and every bite before the restaurant closes at 1am

Lers Ros Thai
730 LARKIN ST, OPEN UNTIL MIDNIGHT
Lers Ros Thai elevates Pad Thai to a new level. The restaurant is clean and posh, but without posh prices. The duck larb salad is a perennial favorite and is one of many dishes that head chef Tom Silargorn boasts as “true Thai flavor.” With dishes from the North and Northeast of Thailand, this is not a basic hole-in-the-wall. Open until midnight at the Tenderloin location and the Hayes Valley location closes at 11pm.

Starbelly
3583 16TH ST, OPEN UNTIL 12AM WEEKENDS
With an outdoor patio, Starbelly is a popular Castro brunch spot, but it is also open late on weekends so there is never a dearth of the popular liver paté. This pate is almost like a meat mousse and goes great with the crispy bread served on the side. The menu also features Californian cuisine, burgers and thin crust pizza. Chef Adam Timney and Co. donate a portion of their proceeds to community causes, including Castro theater and AIDS support organizations.

DNA Pizza
371 11TH ST, OPEN 24 HOURS
Located conveniently next to Slim’s, Audio Discotech and Butter, and connected to DNA Lounge, DNA Pizza serves up hot slices to club-goers and night owls all night long. There’s plenty to see here among the late-night crowd on weekend nights. DNA Pizza also offers vegetarian and vegan pizza options, rare among other late-night options.

Dobbs Ferry
409 GOUGH ST
Dobbs Ferry, one of the latest additions to the Hayes Valley restaurant scene is one that features extended evening service. The bar is open until 1:30am daily and a “family meal” has been added as well for just $5. The family meal is a take on “the food typically enjoyed by restaurant staff as a prelude to their going to work.” So not quite the mac ‘n’ cheese one might picture, but more delectable options such as pork confit with Brussels sprout salad and Creole mustard; beef cheeks with crispy oyster mushrooms and cauliflower puree; or chicken fried pork belly with blistered green beans and jalapeno vinaigrette.
